The alphabet goddess Mātṛkā in some early śaiva Tantras
Résumé
The aim of this paper is to explore the way in which the idea of an alphabet goddess evolves in early śaiva Tantras, from the simple notion of the alphabet called Mātṛkā to a full-fledged personification. In addition to a number of published and unpublished Tantras as source material, some later exegetical interpretations of Kashmirian authors are also analyzed.
