Photomanipulation of a droplet by the chromocapillary effect

Résumé

Liquid droplets can be manipulated in a controlled fashion along trajectories of any desired shape (such as a heart, see picture) by using light to create a wavelength-dependent interfacial tension gradient at a liquid/liquid interface. In this new phenomenon, the "chromocapillary effect", an interfacial flow generates droplet motion in the direction opposite to the gradient.
