Assimilation of Glider Data in the Solomon Sea: An Observing System Simulation Experiment

Résumé

In the southwest Pacific, the western boundary currents (WBC) connect the tropics to the equator at thermocline level. Therefore, they may impact the equatorial Pacific heat and transport budgets and play a role in the climate system. During their transit through the Solomon Sea, these WBC water masses are modified because of the significant mixing induced by internal tides. Gliders monitoring of the Solomon Sea has been operated since 2007 and provide high temporal and along-trajectory resolution temperature and salinity data down to about 600 m, which are of interest for the control of the vertical structure of the mass field. In this study, we focus on the ability of glider data to correct model errors due to a misrepresentation of internal wave driven vertical mixing via data assimilation. An observing system simulation experiment (OSSE) strategy is implemented: glider observations are extracted from a simulation that includes a tidal mixing parameterization and are assimilated in a simulation that differs only by the absence of tidal mixing parameterization. Data assimilation is performed through a local reduced order analysis, based on a sequential scheme derived from the SEEK filter, in a multigrid model. Observations are located in a 1/12° model of the Solomon Sea which is interactively nested in a 1/4° southwest Pacific model, itself embedded offline in a global 1/4° OGCM. We show that assimilating data from a reasonable number of glider yields to a significant improvement of the water masses properties, especially at thermocline level.
