Gestures planning integrating dynamical constraints and related issues in speech motor control

Résumé

The dynamical characteristics of the motor system can strongly influence kinematic patterns of movements. Stiffness influences the displacement and/or deformation capabilities of the effectors, together with their stability in response to external stimulations or perturbations; damping modifies the time course of the movement in a velocity dependent way. Hence, the central nervous cannot ignore these dynamical characteristics when it selects motor commands and determines their variation in time in the aim to achieve a motor task with a required spatial and time accuracy. One of the key-questions in this regard is how dynamical constraints are integrated at the level of gestural planning, in which aim (time control, stability, accuracy) and with which level of complexity. These questions have been addressed quite extensively in motor control research in studies of arm or limb movements. In speech research, the influence of dynamics on articulatory movements has mainly been addressed in the context of linear mass-spring models and from the perspective of the relations between timing and stiffness and/or gestural accuracy and stiffness. Only a few studies mainly carried out by Ostry's group in McGill University (Canada) and Gomi's group in NTT Communication Science Research Labs (Japan) have tried to assess these issues by taking into account the complexity of speech dynamics. In this talk, a presentation of general issues raised in this context in motor control research will be proposed and a few studies will be summarized that have significantly contributed to the debates. The specificity of speech articulators' dynamics will be presented and an analysis will be proposed of how the main findings and proposals elaborated in limb or arm movements studies can contribute to the understanding of how the motor control system can integrate dynamics in speech gesture planning. In conclusion, a modeling approach in elaboration at Gipsa-lab in the context of the GEPPETO model of speech production will be shortly presented.
