Preface

Résumé

With this special issue, the editors intend to honour the memory of Professor J.A.C. (João) Martins, who passed away in Lisbon on August 5th 2008.

Professor Martins made important contributions to Contact Mechanics, in particular to problems involving dynamic frictional contact, which were also the subject of his Ph.D. dissertation. He later became deeply involved in the study of friction-induced instabilities. He was committed to developing a general theoretical framework for the stability of finite dimensional systems for which he uncovered new results on several types of instabilities. These dealt with acceleration-reaction discontinuities at equilibrium and divergence and flutter instabilities of equilibrium states. In connection with divergence instabilities of frictional contact systems, he investigated the bifurcation behaviour of structures involving combinations of plasticity and frictional models. Martins was also interested in the relationship between first-order rate and quasi-static evolution problems, exploring such issues as solvability and solution multiplicity of these problems. Before his untimely passing, he was studying the dynamic stability of quasi-static paths of mechanical systems involving two time scales; he created a rigorous definition of this concept, which led him to a new and important study of singularly perturbed systems. João Martins inspired all those who were privileged to know and work with him. He had an exceptional personality and excellent teaching and scientific abilities. He served his university and the international scientific community with great commitment for many years.

The purpose of this CMAME special issue is to provide a much needed and fresh look into the field of Contact Mechanics and, more especially, on its computational aspects. The last special issue of CMAME on Contact Mechanics was published 11 years ago and was edited by João Martins and Anders Klarbring. Much relevant progress has occurred and new contributions on this topic have been made since then. Besides providing an overview on recent advances in this field, this special issue collects contributions related to João Martins’ work in a comprehensive way, combining theory as well as computation. The content of this issue reflects and highlights some interesting developments made over the last decade especially in computational contact methodologies.

Specific numerical approaches have been developed in the last decade in order to account for large scale problems as well as microscopic scales: parallelism, multilevel scheme, error estimates and adaptivity, extended finite element methods, etc. New numerical methods and new algorithms have shown their efficiency. Tribological aspects are now sometimes taken into account both in new models and in the computational methods used to solve them. The role of the asperities in contact mechanics of multiple bodies is now much better understood. This special issue does not intend to cover the entire panorama of these new results, but focuses on some of the key-points in the advances made in the computations and in the associated theoretical analysis.

The volume is organized as follows. After a survey on mortar methods, two contributions on extended finite element methods and equilibration techniques for error indicator evaluations in frictional contact are presented. Granular media is the subject of the next two articles including multiscale approach in one case and domain decomposition in the other one. The following six papers are related with new numerical techniques and new algorithms, sensitivity analysis, large penetration, domain decomposition, parallelism and geometrical approaches. The next four articles deal with more theoretical aspects of computational contact mechanics and are concerned with frictional wedging problems, bifurcation and continuation methods, numerical analysis of a viscoelastodynamic problem and discrete elements. Two of them are due to co-workers of João Martins. The last four papers are concerned with sophisticate methods to solve specific problems arising in wear modelling, masonry structures, temperature conduction or plate buckling. Such methods include the multiscale approach, the coupling of molecular dynamics and finite elements, and spectral methods.

A minisymposium on ‘‘Contact Mechanics’’, devoted to the memory of João Martins, was organized by Michel Raous and Manuel Monteiro Marques at the Euromech Solid Mechanics Conference in Lisbon on September 7–11th, 2009. This issue is partly built on the contributions on computational aspects given to this minisymposium.

Tinsley Oden, who supervised the Ph.D. thesis of Prof. João Martins in Austin in the 80s and agreed to the organization of this special issue. This volume is dedicated to the memory of our colleague and friend João Martins, to his wife Anabela, and to his daughters Rita and Susana.
