If only my home could help me cooking

Résumé

AIM Persons with an intellectual disability encounter difficulties in the achievement of their daily tasks, especially for complicated ones. For example, deficiencies in memory and planning can significantly impede cooking activities where limitations in remembering where the ingredients are located and organizing steps in a recipe can be an issue. In this context, a smart apartment where persons could interact by means such as a touch screen would certainly be useful. For example, after choosing a recipe, the person could obtain information about steps involved either in a text, video or photo mode. Method Specifically, this study assessed a cooking assistant implemented in a Smart apartment. This assistant was tested with 12 persons with an intellectual disability using a single-case design with two conditions (Condition A - with technology support and Condition B - without technology). Results The smart apartment was able to help the person identify where the ingredients or cookware were located, either by displaying information on the screen or by highlighting their location in the kitchen. Specifically, results show a significant impact of the smart apartment environment on autonomous functioning, a core component of self-determination, for all participants
