Differentiation of the role of the unsaturated and the saturated zones in the hydrogeological behaviour of carbonate aquifers from Southern Spain, by means of the use δ13CTDIC, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and several hydrodynamical parameters

Résumé

This work focuses on the use of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Carbon-13 combined with the classical chemical and physico-chemical tracers to study several karst aquifers from S Spain with different lithologic and hydrodynamic contexts. The TOC content originates from the soil and it is an interesting tracer of fast infiltration. TOC content varies antipathetic to those of magnesium, usual indicator of the residence time of water. However, the TOC seems much more sensitive than chemical and isotopic tracers usually used in the study of karstic flows. The complementarity of magnesium and TOC has been used as a relevant tool in order to characterize the behaviour of the aquifers. In addition, the Carbon-13 of Total Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (δ13CTDIC) was a good tracer to identify processes that take place: slow versus fast infiltration, role of the epikarst and unsaturated and saturated zones. It can be considered that water from the unsaturated zone evolve as an open system to the CO2, (more depleted δ13CTDIC) whilst water from saturated zone evolve in a closed conditions with respect to the biogenic CO2 (less depleted δ13CTDIC). This research is interesting for a better understanding of the behaviour of these aquifers, but also to characterize karstic flows and to evaluate the vulnerability of the systems.
