Simulation modeling of emergency service with the impact of inpatient bed resource

Résumé

Improving patient flow in emergency department has become a chief preoccupation along with increasing patient census and department overcrowding. A detailed simulation model of emergency service is one of the effective decision-support tools to identify bottlenecks and to optimize resource utilization. In this paper, we present an Arena model of emergency service in which has been integrated a preadmission planning of inpatient beds, simulating a scenario that the emergency department knows about inpatient beds availability in care units. The extended process of emergency service from patient arrival to hospitalization is involved in the simulation model; consequently the model can be used to analyze the impact of acute patient flow on the planning work of inpatient bed resources. Besides, using Visual Basic for Application routines, the input data from the planning such as length of stay, bed capacity and accurate bed occupation is introduced into the model and can be adjusted through external data files.
