The Image of the Bishop in the Middle Ages.

Résumé

The image of the bishop that the author propose to evoke here closely concerns the definition of the imago in the Middle Ages, which Jean-Claude Schmitt has explored in recent years. The concept, as developed by Schmitt, rests upon the assertion that the medieval image not only illustrated a material reality, but also - and above all - functioned as a visual expression of ideas and mentalities.
