2R and 3R optical regeneration: from device to system characterization

Résumé

We review a number of methods to assess the efficiency of a regenerator. Back-to-back characterization gives some information of the possible regenerative properties of the device but do not constitute the proof the device will be efficient when cascaded in a transmission network.
