Semi-group theory for the Perona-Malik equation
Résumé
We show that numerical observations on the Perona-Malik
equation (``anisotropic diffusion''), which arises in particular in image processing and in
oceanography, may be accounted for by associating to this formally
ill-posed PDE the gradient flow with exponential growth generated
by a Lipschitz perturbation of a convex functional, in the
framework of semi-group theory. The automatic stratification
observed numerically is accounted for using an image model with
fixed discontinuities, which are selectively attenuated, rather
than smoothened, by this nonlinear flow.
