Nonlinear diffusion and hyperbolic smoothing for edge enhancement

Satyanad Kichenassamy

Résumé

We give a mathematical foundation for the interpretation of numerical results for the Perona-Malik equation and introduce a reversible smoothing procedure, based on a second-order hyperbolic equation. These results are briefly compared with other edge-detection techniques, including mean curvature flow. We prove in particular that anisotropic diffusion is TVD (total variation diminishing) in one dimension.
