Synchrony in whitefish stock dynamics: disentangling the effects of local drivers and climate
Résumé
Serious games are interesting tools to raise awareness of the environment and human-induced impacts on ecosystems. Féraventure is the first video game allowing players to discover the life cycle of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), also known locally as “Féra”. Players immerse themselves in the whitefish life cycle from the egg to the adult stage. The conditions encountered can be favourable and thus allow the fish to feed, grow and reproduce. But whitefish can also be confronted with temperatures that are too warm and that will prevent the eggs from developing, the fish can have difficulty finding the necessary resources to feed and therefore grow, and can be eaten by predators or be caught by fishers! This serious video game, easy to play on computers, targets a pre-teen audience. If pre-teen are already aware of environmental changes, they are not necessarily aware of all the impacts that these changes can cause in aquatic ecosystems. This video game creates exchanges with the public and is a starting point for more advanced explanations on environmental drivers and fish population dynamics, especially during laboratory open days or at schools. Thus, the impact of climate change on whitefish population dynamics in lakes can be better understood, as other factors such as competition, predation, fishing, and pollution. This is the second version of Féraventure and is intended to be distributed widely.
