            <abstract xml:lang="en">
              <p>Actuator devices converting energy into motion are a fundamental part of everyday life. However, there is currently an unmet need in actuation technologies to provide soft, smooth, noiseless movement which can mimic human motion and dexterity. The development of such “artificial muscles” is burgeoning in both interest and importance as it would enable significant advances in areas as important as robotics, medicine and aeronautics. To enable a step-change in this field, this project proposes to develop unprecedented macroscopic-scale materials based on switchable spin crossover molecular actuators with remarkable actuating performances. Using an innovative combination of molecular, crystal and polymer synthesis methods these composite materials will be endowed with electrical actuation and a good controllability, which will be a major breakthrough. More fundamentally, this project aims at understanding in-depth structure vs. mechanical property relationships in these switchable materials, which is essential for processing and optimizing their function.</p>

              <p>Les dispositifs d'actionnement convertissant l'énergie en mouvement sont des éléments fondamentaux de la vie quotidienne. Cependant, il existe actuellement un besoin non satisfait dans les technologies d'actionnement pour fournir un mouvement souple, régulier et silencieux qui peut imiter le mouvement et la dextérité de l'homme. Le développement de tels ''muscles artificiels'' suscite un intérêt croissant car il permettrait des avancées significatives dans des domaines aussi importants que la robotique, la médecine et l'aéronautique. Afin de permettre un changement d'étape dans ce domaine, ce projet propose de développer des matériaux inédits à l'échelle macroscopique basés sur des actionneurs moléculaires à transition de spin, avec des performances d'actionnement remarquables. Grâce à une combinaison innovante de méthodes de synthèse moléculaire et cristalline couplée à une ingénierie des matériaux polymères, ces matériaux composites seront dotés de propriétés d'actionnement électrique et d’une bonne contrôlabilité, ce qui constituera une percée majeure. Plus fondamentalement, ce projet vise à comprendre en profondeur les relations structure/propriétés mécaniques dans ces matériaux commutables, ce qui est essentiel pour le traitement et l'optimisation de leur fonction.</p>
