On the basis of a semantic investigation, a corpus of Latin and vernacular investigation is defined from which the motif of the Wild Hunt - a supernatural procession made up of hunters or warriors - can be identified and studied diachronically (cf. Lévi-Strauss: a myth is the addition of all its fragments). During the Middle Ages, a scholar tradition likened it to a travelling Purgatory. The motif never ceased to fertilise the imagination of poets and artists: reminiscences of the Wild Hunter can be found in the features of the commander of Don Juan, the Wandering Jew and the Alder King; his name survives, in a slightly altered form, in the most illustrious of his descendants, Harlequin. Local traditions, for their part, preserve its memory under a variety of names - it's the price of any topographical (re)rooting - such as the Gallery Hunt, the Herod Hunt or, in the Breton world, the traditions around the Ankou. And on the walls of churches and even cemeteries, macabre dances can still be seen, barely paled, expressing in their own way a vision of the motif : the myth of the Wild Hunt has never ceased to generate original and imaginative variants, while retaining a remarkably unchanging core.

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">
