Microwave and millimeter wave devices

Résumé

This thesis presents a synthesis of my research and teaching activities at Chalmers University of Technology and Lab-STICC/IMT Atlantique. It also traces my career as a production engineer in companies in the microwave and optoelectronics field, namely Ericsson Microwave Electronics and Optillion. To design and manufacture devices operating at very high frequencies, it is necessary to understand the physical phenomena. However, it is also desirable to address manufacturing, issues to avoid the design of devices that would only work in a simulator. It is rare that the same person masters both manufacturing and design. This gap results in a lower than necessary production yield. During my years in industry, I learned the basics of microelectronic production. Then, as a research engineer with the mission to design millimeter chips and their packaging, I consolidated my microwave knowledge. At Lab-STICC/IMT Atlantique I learned how radar and Radio-over-Fiber systems work. Lately, I focused on the design and fabrication of low temperature ceramic devices, called LTCC. At Lab-STICC/IMT Atlantique, my endeavour is to teach my students and graduate students the link between design and production that I have acquired during my career. The objective is to train engineers and scientists who will be appreciated by the industry and the research sector.
