IN THE SHIVERING SAND : FIGURES OF OTHERNESS IN VICTORIAN LITERATURE

Dans les sables mouvants : figures de l'altérité dans la littérature victorienne

Fabienne Gaspari

Résumé

The Shivering Sand in Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone (1868) stands for the disappearance of Victorian certainties, but it also represents the place where buried and concealed things resurface. It is both a real and a symbolic location emblematic of heterogeneity and hybridity and it is associated with a reflection on the dialectical link between identity and otherness. The research presented here starts with George Moore, an Anglo-Irish writer of the late nineteenth century, and with the theme of the body. It first focuses on the conflict between the spirit and the flesh, the relationship between the body and space, the expression of desire. The contemporary works of Thomas Hardy and George Gissing offer on the same subjects a perspective which is just as complex. The character’s body is trapped in the letter and in the determinism of texts equating passion with disease and repressing the very excesses they describe. This relationship between otherness and identity can also be noticed in the « body » of the work itself in which allogeneic forms are inserted. The use of quotations in one of Moore’s autobiographies raises the issue of intertextuality and finds echoes in comments on the text/image relationship and on the « nomadic voices » linked with the representation of the Other in Dickens, Gaskell, Conrad and Kipling. The last stage in this research, « Morsels for the Gods » : the writing of the visage in the British novel (1839-1900) considers the visage as a filter through which one can observe the treatment of the faces of otherness in Victorian literature. This work examines the modalities of creation of the face, shows that it can be a form of discourse and studies the interplay between visage and time.
