Time pressure effects on information processing

LES EFFETS DE LA PRESSION TEMPORELLE SUR LE TRAITEMENT DES INFORMATIONS ET LE COMPORTEMENT D’ACHAT

Résumé

This research seeks to characterize the concept of time-pressure and its effects on information processing and buying behavior. A review of the interdisciplinary literature makes clear, according to the most frequently employed cognitive approach, three principal effects of time-pressure: the accelerated rhythm of information processing, the selection of their number, and the change of the adopted decision-making strategy. An exploratory qualitative study enriches the concept thanks to three metaphors, characterizing three different modes of consumer response to the time constraint, and highlighting its non-cognitive consequences. The union of this metaphoric approach with the models proposed in the published literature relative to persuasion gives birth to the integrating framework of the effects of time-pressure. The adopted methodology’s goal is to test the effects of time-pressure according to four decision-making channels proposed in the model, regarding the strategy of information processing: Systematic (S), Affective (A), based on Cognitive Shortcuts (R), and using Mechanisms of Imitation (I). From a positivist perspective the study, thanks to the procedure of information tables, validates three of the four channels of influence. In addition, the adaptation of the procedure to account for interpretive objectives allows for the verification of existing inferences which have been employed and to qualify their importance. The on-line experiment, administered to 580 consumers, reveals clearly that they adopt simultaneous decision-making channels, different and complementary, and that these influence their buying behavior. Time-pressure influences purchasing intentions in direct and indirect fashion, through the intermediary of identified decision-making strategies. The emotional and cognitive dimensions explain why and how the time constraint influences the consumer’s behavioral response.
