Maxwell Lyte. Solar eclipse observed by Maxwell Lyte at Sencours Pass on July 18, 1860
These photographs were taken at the hostel of Sencours, at an altitude of 2365m, by Maxwell Lyte. Alexis Sajous, photographer in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, was his assistant. A refractor of about 3.50m had been installed in a makeshift hangar (boars and metal sheets) near the hostel. A narrow opening let the solar light reach the lens, and the photographs were taken at the focus of the telescope without any magnification. The diameter of the photographic image of the sun corresponds indeed to a focal length of 3.60m. According to Mr. Sajous, the installation had been painstaking. The photographs were taken by very good weather, whereas the inferior clouds, completely covering the country, reached 2200 or 2300m. It was raining below these clouds.. Photography.
