Résumé

Recently hysteretic behaviour has been measured in some friction experiments involving elastic surfaces. Moreover the approach toward the asymptotic value for the friction force is characterized by a well defined length scale. We describe how this behaviour is connected to the collective properties of the elastic instabilities suffered by the elastic body as it is displaced quasistatically. We express the relaxation length of the hysteresis in terms of the elasticity of the surface and the properties of the rough substrate. The predicted scaling are confirmed numerically.
