Aggregation and segregation: gays in the Paris urban area
Résumé
The texts maps the spatial logics of aggregation and segregation of gays in the Paris region. It considers the specific role and history of the Marais neighbourhood and its gradual gentrification, which has made it more exclusive and less pluralistic. On the basis of interviews with gay men who inhabit or visit the area, different regimes of engagement which the city are described, in terms of intimate or public experiences. Relations with the community and degrees of engagement with it depend on gays’ social backgrounds and determinations.
