Roundtable on Researching Internet Governance: Approaches to the Study of Changing Technologies, Power Panoplies, and Governance Structures

Meryem Marzouki

Résumé

This roundtable provides a holistic examination of a case study of more than two decades of shifts in power, players, roles, and governance structures. Its presenters grapple with and analyze research approaches to the case of internet governance. Currently there is scant work that addresses a major gap in the study of research approaches for analysis of innovative structures and power shifts in multi stakeholder settings. This roundtable also reflects work from multiple disciplines and concomitant multiple methods to match the complex research challenges posed by communication-linked technologies requiring new rules and networked institutions as well as new participants in such settings. It also highlights findings from a major book project focused on a range of internet governance research topics, each of which illuminates transformations in power equations among the multiple stakeholders in the internet governance ecosystem from civil society and the technical sector to the private sector and traditional nation state governments. Taken together, the findings possess implications for future research methods and related global governance arenas.
