Haméa et xârâgurè, langues kanak en danger

Résumé

This article is concerned with the current situation of two Kanak languages, Haméa and Xârâgurè, whose status and existence have been weakened considerably by various historical and social factors. First of all, I will briefly discuss the origin and the current sociolinguistic situation of Kanak languages. Next the two languages Haméa and Xârâgurè will be presented on the basis of my own fieldwork. Their precarious situation is partly a consequence of factors generally recognized as leading to the endangerment of languages, but also of more specific causes linked to colonization. In spite of some recent awareness of this situation, the future of these two languages is far from being guaranteed.
