Through the Eland ceremony, the author tackles heritage and identity issues related to rock art sites in the post-apartheid South Africa. During the first day of this ceremony, the Abatwa (descendants from the San, a hunter-gatherer population) perform rituals, while the local community, mixing Zoulou population and descendants of the San, meet during the second day. Several actors then use the site and the patrimonial value of rock art sites for identity and territory claims and dynamics. Between tradition and invention, private and public, local and global, the author analyses this event in terms of processes of appropriation, which underline the multivocal aspect of heritage dynamics surrounding rock art sites.
