There is an increasing awareness in the transplant community that family plays a crucial role in releasing donor organs for transplant purposes. Although in most jurisdictions the family has little legal standing, in practice organ retrieval protocols and procedures amount to giving the next-of-kin something akin to a veto over posthumous organ removal.
