The evaluative or gradative quantifier un poco has been described in the literature as an expression capable of conveying either quantificational or attenuative meanings in discourse. The literature suggests that these values depend on semantic or pragmatic factors and on whether the expression modifies the propositional content of the statement. This study, however, argues that the distinction between un poco as a quantifier or as an attenuator is determined by the nature of the unit it modifies. Thus, when un poco modifies a property denoted by an adjective, adverb, verb, or the duration of an event, it expresses a quantificational value. Conversely, when it influences the process or phases of an event, or the illocutionary force of a speech act, it conveys attenuation. Furthermore, this study argues that the scope of un poco is consistently associated with a unit bearing the [+acotable] feature, which it serves to delimit, demonstrating that its function as a gradative or evaluative quantifier remains active in all discourse contexts in which it appears.

            <abstract xml:lang="es">
