              <p>Urbanloop is an autonomous railway-based pod system that offers great advantages in terms of energy efficiency, reduced cost, rapid and seamless transit over traditional public urban transportation systems. Each Urbanloop pod operates autonomously, with its velocity regulated by an embedded controller. The objective of this work is to present a model-based design methodology for the velocity controller of an individual pod. To this end, we first develop a physics-based dynamical model of the system and rigorously reveal that it exhibits two time scales. We then leverage singularly perturbation methods combined with recent contraction theoretical tools to design the controller guaranteeing that the pod velocity tracks the given reference velocity profile. The proposed feedback law is designed based on the reduced-order model and combines an output-feedback component, which enforces contraction properties, with a feedforward term that induces the desired reference trajectory. We show that the trajectories of the original, full-order model all exponentially converge to the reference trajectory, up to an error proportional the order of the time-scale separation parameter, thereby ensuring that the control objective is satisfied when this parameter is "sufficiently" small. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated in numerical simulations, where the reference trajectory is designed to minimize the transit time between two stations while satisfying given safety constraints.</p>
