              <p>The hygric absorption of plant fibers in biobased composites leads to swelling and plasticization of the various polymers constituting the composite (matrix + fibers). Indeed, moisture impacts their mechanical properties and those of the associated composite. An optimum initial water content for the fibers has been found to be around 7%. This water content, which is critical for the production of flax fiber composite, is sensitive to vacuum and temperature changes. Significant moisture desorption was observed in fibers when vacuum is applied in a solid-boxing. However, this desorption is not observed during conventional pre-infusion compaction, pointing the existence of a possible mechano-sorption phenomenon. Furthermore, it has been found that the temperature raise of a flax-epoxy composite at constant relative humidity causes water desorption. Nethertheless, this phenomenon is absent for fibers alone. This points to another possible mechano-sorption effect, potentially due to thermal expansion of the various constituents of the composite. In this way, the parameters of pressure, temperature and relative humidity are crucials to control water content, and hence part quality during forming.</p>

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">
              <p>L’absorption hygrique des fibres végétales dans les composites biosourcés provoque un gonflement et une plastification des différents polymères (matrice + fibres) qui modifient leurs propriétés mécaniques et celles du composite associé. Ainsi, un optimum de la teneur en eau initiale des fibres a pu être trouvé aux alentours de 7 %. Cette teneur en eau, critique pour la réalisation de pièces composites à fibres de lin, est sensible à la mise sous vide et aux variations de température. Une désorption significative des fibres a été constatée lors d’une mise sous vide en caisson solide, mais n’est pas observée lors d’un compactage de pré-infusion classique, suggérant l’existence d’un possible phénomène de mécano-sorption. De plus, il a été constaté qu’une montée en température à humidité relative constante d’un composite lin-époxy provoque une désorption en eau de ce dernier, alors que ce phénomène est absent pour des fibres seules. Ceci révèle un autre possible effet de mécano-sorption potentiellement dû à la dilatation thermique des différents constituants de ce composite. Ainsi, les paramètres de pression, de température et d’humidité relative sont capitaux pour maitriser la teneur en eau, et donc la qualité de la pièce lors de sa mise en forme.</p>
