              <p>Computational techniques have a long history in optical imaging, enabling signals to be reconstructed from point detectors.  While several acquisition strategies, preprocessing steps and reconstruction algorithms have been proposed, these are often considered in isolation from one another, ignoring time constraints. In this paper, we unify the main variants of Hadamard acquisitions and derive the associated mean squared error (MSE) of reconstruction in the presence of Poisson-Gaussian noise.  To enable a fair comparison of acquisitions involving different numbers of measurements, we consider a fixed total acquisition time.Our analysis reveals that discarding some pixels from the field of view reduces the reconstruction MSE. Consequently, we introduce freeform imaging: an imaging configuration in which only a subset of the pixels in the field of view are observed. Freeform imaging can be achieved using either masked acquisition matrices, where certain columns are set to zero, or non-imaging matrices, where the rows directly apply to the subset of pixels belonging to the free area. The latter approach can further reduce the reconstruction MSE compared to a masked acquisition matrix.We have theoretically quantified the MSE of freeform images and validated our results using simulations. We have also implemented freeform imaging using a digital micromirror device and a compact spectrometer. In the presence of low light fluxes, for which Hadamard imaging is most relevant, we observed significant gains of around 17 to 25 dB compared to scanning a measurement point in the freeform region and around 6 to 7 dB for complete single-pixel acquisition. Thanks to computer-controlled spatial light modulators, the hardware implementation of freeform imaging is particularly convenient and could pave the way for fast imaging in a wide range of applications requiring the measurement of low-light signals.</p>
