TORCS — “CHIEFLY” INSIGNIA IN THE ROMAN-GERMAN WEST AND IN CENTRAL EUROPEAN BARBARICUM IN THE EARLY MEROVING TIME

Гривны — «вождеские» инсигнии на римско-германскoм Западе и в центральноевропейском Барбарикуме в раннемеровингское время.

Résumé

High-status gold objects (power insignia), such as massive bracelets with broadening ends (Fig. 1, 1, 2, 4, 5), T-shaped fibulas of Roman officials (Fig. 1, 9–11), signet-rings (Fig. 1, 3, 6–8) and torcs (Fig. 1, 12) were found in a number of “chiefly” burials of the early Meroving period (second half of the V — first third of the VI c.) in the Roman-German West and Central European Barbaricum. T he fibulas and signet-rings are certainly of Roman origins, while the bracelets trace back to the “Barbarian” costume traditions. The torcs have prototypes in both Roman Empire (Fig. 3) and Barbaricum (Fig. 2, 1, 4, 5; 4). However, the study of the “princely” attire of the Great Migration Period testifies to the “Barbarian” origins of these insignia.
