Making value off-patent : India's pharmaceutical globalisation

Résumé

This chapter examines how Indian pharmaceutical firms create value outside the intellectual property (IP)-driven model that dominates the Global North. Based on multi-sited fieldwork (2015–2023) across factories, offices, and distribution networks, it shows how companies rely on inventive copying, flexible manufacturing, and dense social networks to commercialise off-patent medicines. Rather than investing heavily in research and patent monopolies, Indian firms pursue incremental innovations—through dosage changes, packaging, or novel delivery systems—while adapting manufacturing standards and leveraging family, community, and professional ties to reach semi-regulated markets in the Global South. These strategies generate temporary and local monopolies, producing a form of pharmaceutical capitalism that contrasts with global rentier regimes yet plays a decisive role in access to affordable medicines. By highlighting these “ordinary” practices of value-making, the chapter contributes to rethinking technoscientific globalisation, underscoring how off-patent drugs and generic industries actively shape alternative, non-monopolistic forms of global capitalism.
