              <p>The Proterozoic Athabasca Basin (western edge of the Canadian Shield, Canada) hosts some of the largest uranium deposits known that are specifically characterized by massive uranium mineralization (highest uranium grades for economical deposits). The majority are unconformity-related uranium deposits, in which high grades of uranium are typically localized at the interface between the basal basin series (sandstone/conglomerate) and the underlying basement lithologies, and generally associated with basement-hosted graphitic faults. The formation of the deposits is linked to intense fluid circulation occurring along these reactivated structures, especially in the upper basement and basal part of the basin where uranium precipitated. Reactivated fault zones and properties of related surrounding lithologies in both basin and basement are considered first order controls of the “plumbing system” for mineralizing fluid circulation. The geometric relation between hydrothermal alteration, mineralization and fault/fractured zones is however unclear in massive uranium deposits (e.g. McArthur River, Cigar Lake), mainly because detailed observation in the “core” of the mineralized system is difficult to perform due to the extreme degree of alteration and mineralization that overprinted/replaced the initial lithology and structures. Recent discoveries of small to medium sized uranium mineralized pods both on the Waterfound and McClean South prospects allowed to transect mineralized systems with a lower degree of alteration. The lithologies and fracture systems are still relatively well-preserved in these prospects and offer favorable conditions for characterizing the relationships between lithological variations, fracture networks, alteration, and uranium mineralization. First results from detailed observations on drillcore suggest that the development of the mineralized system, including the clay-replacement halo and the uranium oxides emplacement, is both controlled by the architecture of the fractured system and by lithological variations in the basal formations of the Athabasca Basin. Hydrothermal fluids responsible for the replacement by uranium ore and alteration halo of the initial lithology (silica mobility, clay-replacement) and for the precipitation of uranium oxides were strongly channelized both along steep/vertical pathways (fracture network) and along sub-horizontal pathways formed by conglomeratic layers.</p>
