Introduction: The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus concept in the Mediterranean region
Résumé
The MedECC Special Report Interlinking climate change with the Water-Energy Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus in the Mediterranean Basin' provides a comprehensive scientific assessment of the region’s interconnected challenges related to water scarcity, food and energy insecurity, and ecosystem degradation, all of which are intensified by climate change. Building on the First Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR1) by MedECC, this report deepens the understanding of the interlinkages and trade-offs within the WEFE nexus. The Chapter 1 introduces and frames the critical challenges faced by the Mediterranean Basin in relation to its interconnected social, economic, and ecological systems. It provides the context, background and key dimensions of this assessment. The report has been written by 60 authors from 15 countries, all contributing in individual capacity and without financial compensation. The UNEP/MAP – Barcelona Convention Secretariat, through its Plan Bleu Regional Activity Center, and the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean work in partnership to support MedECC, and to contribute to establish a sound and transparent scientific assessment process.
