              <p>The interaction between droplets and shallow pools plays a crucial role in various fields, from inkjet printing to coating technologies. We study the effect of surfactants on the impact of surfactant-free droplets onto surfactant-laden thin liquid films using high-speed imaging and numerical simulations. We characterise different surfactants by measuring their dynamic surface tension within a tensiometer framework. This characterisation allows surfactants to be classified as slow or fast. Subsequently, we present a regime map of the impact dynamics based on the morphology of the interface as a function of the Weber number and dynamic surface tension, where we identify three distinct regimes: 'smooth' receding of the sheet, 'recoiling' breakup and 'splashing'. To understand the behaviour of slow and fast surfactants in the 'smooth' receding regime, we perform numerical simulations of droplets impacting a pool loaded with SDS, which can be treated as an insoluble surfactant. These simulations account for both the reduction in surface tension and surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses, providing insights into the rate of surfactant spreading as new interface is formed and the role of surfactant type in relation to the strength of interfacial Marangoni stresses generated. The simulations also reveal the stiffening and retardation of impact dynamics caused by the presence of surfactants.</p>
