History of Grammaticography
Résumé
Grammaticography, i.e. grammar writing, or, more generally, grammaticization, is an age-old practice. The most ancient complete grammar which has reached us dates back to the 5th Century B.C., and the practice of grammar writing has never ceased since then. This entry answers the following questions: What exactly does this practice involve? What are its underlying driving forces? Who grammaticizes and for whom? Is it possible to identify common trends that transcend linguistic diversity, time and geography?
