Understanding Social Inequalities in Childhood Asthma: Quantifying the Mediating Role of Modifiable Early-Life Risk Factors in Seven European Birth Cohorts
Résumé
What is already known about this topic? Children from disadvantaged socioeconomic circumstances have an increased risk of asthma. In the few studies that have assessed pathways to these inequalities, bronchiolitis, home environment, and perinatal factors have been identified as potential mediators.
What does this article add to our knowledge? We uniquely examined multiple potential mediators of inequalities across several European birth cohorts, with findings suggesting that maternal smoking, adverse birth outcomes, and breastfeeding duration have a consistent role in mediating social inequalities in asthma.
How does this study impact current management guidelines? Our study indicates that public health actions in the perinatal period to help mothers cease smoking, improve birth outcomes, and support breastfeeding could provide some benefit in helping to address inequalities in childhood asthma.
