Monitoring Lateral Movement of Leachate Using Electrical Resistivity and Moisture Content of Soil

Résumé

This chapter researched on monitoring lateral Movement of Leachate Using Electrical Resistivity and Moisture Content of Soil. Ground water and soil contamination by leachate is a serious pollution problem. Landfill leachate is one of the main sources of groundwater and surface water pollution if it is not properly collected and treated and safely disposed as it may percolate through soil reaching water aquifer. Study also create a straightforward model to track its movement. An emerging technique for characterization of soil is soil electrical resistivity. Moisture content and soil moisture density are two key factors that affect it. Determinations of electrical resistivity of soil in and away from a municipal waste dump site as well as laboratory determination of soil moisture content were carried out in this study. The fall of potential method is adopted in this work for measurement of electrical resistivity. The materials include an ammeter, a voltmeter, earth electrodes, thick cable and a 9-volt battery. A linear link between resistivity and regression analysis was intended to be established. The results demonstrate that moisture content dropped as distance from the sources of leachate formation increased, but resistivity increased. The developed model showed a good coefficient of correlation of 0.975 thus validating the model. Leachate concentration/moisture content has been confirmed to vary with distance away from point of production.
