Exploitation of wild fruit trees and shrubs at the early Neolithic site of Aşıklı Höyük, Central Anatolia

Résumé

In the early Holocene, the transition to sedentary life had a major impact on woodland areas. Wild fruit trees and shrubs were actively harvested for their wood and fruits as evidenced since the mid-9th millennium cal BCE at the aceramic Neolithic site of Aşıklı Höyük, located in central Anatolia, at the crossroads of different biotopes. With its long occupational sequence, the site yields a unique opportunity to understand the relationship between humans and trees within the context of early agriculture and domestication process. Recent research indicates a variety of taxa being exploited at the site, including Pistacia, Celtis tournefortii, Quercus and various Rosaceae, of which some are not present in the local environment today. The aim of this paper is to combine the results stemming from two approaches, anthracology and carpology, and re-examine the early diversity of wild fruit woody species exploited by the first occupants at Aşıklı Höyük. The results will provide a better assessment of wild plant use, the selection practices and the dynamics of environmental exploitation. Overall, the objective is to shed light on how fruit trees and shrubs, which are now a significant part of agrosilvopastoral systems in the studied region, were integrated into the lifestyles of early sedentary and agricultural populations.
