Ecodesign of integrated packaging and distribution systems ensuring the quality and safety of fortified infant flours

Plastic pollution, particularly in tropical regions without waste management systems, is a major environmental problem. This study focuses on identifying ecodesigned packaging for protecting fortified infant formula in Madagascar, a country with high rates of infant malnutrition. The objective is to replace the current packaging which is a non-biodegradable multi-layer film containing aluminized poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The aim is to develop a biodegradable, compostable alternative, with minimization of the environmental impact while maintaining product quality, safety and accessibility for vulnerable populations. The study identifies specific challenges posed by the tropical climate, such as heat, humidity and the lack of cold chain logistics. Madagascar’s climatic conditions, characterized by a hot and humid tropical climate with significant daily temperature and humidity variations. Fieldwork was conducted to analyze production and distribution processes, assess environmental factors influencing the product’s shelf life, and define parameters for an accelerated aging study. Preliminary analyses indicate that the adsorption of water and oxidative degradation were two main factors of degradation. In tropical conditions and without packaging, the product absorbs moisture rapidly, limiting its microbiological shelf life and acceptable vitamin E content to just 14 days. The current multi-layer plastic packaging offers effective protection from water vapor and oxygen, extending the shelf life to up to one year. Biodegradable materials show potential to protect the product during its distribution period, even if they do not currently offer the same barrier properties as multi-layer plastic. Preliminary shelf-life analyses were carried out using PBAT-based biodegradable blends and uncoated and coated paper. With the help of these data, optimization will be carried out to match this novel shelf life with the needs of the supply chain. The originality and contribution of this research lie in identifying an optimized packaging solution that balances sustainability and functionality, while providing valuable data on the degradation of fortified infant flours in tropical climates, an area with limited available information.
