Humans can spontaneously or intentionally synchronise their movements with external rhythms. Complex sensorimotor synchronisation skills acquisition, such as the capacity to perform musical rhythms, may critically depend on interactive coordination, and is probably learnt by imitating social partners. However, this hypothesis remains to be validated by determining whether people process rhythm better with someone or on their own. Here, we investigate whether the social context, simulated with virtual reality, improves typical children’s and adults’ perception, synchronisation, and learning of drumming patterns. Virtual partners expressing non-verbal communication such as gaze, and facial expressions (social condition), human-shaped partners without non-verbal cues, or drumsticks moving alone (intermediate conditions) are displayed. Finally, a non-social, auditory-only condition is presented. Our preliminary results obtained from six young adults revealed that the perception of rhythm disruption may be improved in social conditions. In further experiments, participants’ eye movements will be recorded to determine whether visual attention is associated with the beneficial effect of interactive synchronisation. The effect of the social context on rhythmic processing may refine rehabilitative treatments based on rhythmic training protocols for children and adults with motor and cognitive developmental disorders (e.g., dyslexia).
