Tailoring the structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of BaFe12O19 hexaferrites through rare earth (Y) and transition metal (Cr) Co-substitution

Résumé

This study reports the synthesis of substituted Ba-Y hexaferrites, Ba₀.₉Y₀.₁Fe₁₂₋ₓCrₓO₁₉ (BYFCO) with x = 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2, using the solid-state reaction method. The BYFCO compounds were found to crystallize in the magnetoplumbite-type structure, belonging to the P6₃/mmc space group. The crystallite sizes were found to be 87 nm for x = 0.0 and 56 nm for x = 0.2. The size and morphology of the synthesized compounds were further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM (HR-TEM) images. The particle size was observed to vary between 78 nm for x = 0.0 and 47 nm for x = 0.2, with HR-TEM results closely matching those obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, confirming the consistency between the two techniques. Magnetic measurements show that all samples reach saturation magnetization (Ms) at room temperature under fields of approximately 5 T, followed by a decrease in magnetization. The saturation magnetization decreases with Cr substitution, from 74.52 emu/g (x = 0.0) to 72.86 emu/g (x = 0.1) and 67.75 emu/g (x = 0.2), attributed to the dilution of magnetic moments. Coercivity (Hc) increases with Cr content, ranging from 4.57 kOe (x = 0.0) to 6.32 kOe (x = 0.2), likely due to changes in crystalline particle size. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy (Keff) decreases from 3.48 × 10⁵ emu/cm³ to 1.42 × 10⁵ emu/cm³, suggesting the potential for highperformance magnetic devices. The Curie temperature (Tc) remains relatively stable, decreasing slightly from 708 K (x = 0.0) to 703 K (x = 0.2) with Cr substitution. The magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) decreases with increasing Cr content, reaching 1.055 J•kg⁻¹•K⁻¹ (x = 0.1) and 0.973 J•kg⁻¹•K⁻¹ (x = 0.2), which can be attributed to the dilution of the magnetic sublattices and the reduced interaction between iron and chromium ions. Moreover, the relative cooling power (RCP) increases with Cr concentration and applied field, from 143 J•kg⁻¹•K⁻¹ (x = 0.0) to 216 J•kg⁻¹•K⁻¹. These results suggest that Ba₀.₉Y₀.₁Fe₁₂₋ₓCrₓO₁₉ hexaferrites exhibit promising magnetic and magnetocaloric properties for magnetic refrigeration applications. The increased coercivity and anisotropy, coupled with the potential for improved cooling power, also indicate their suitability for high-performance magnetic devices such as motors, sensors, and data storage technologies.
