What can we currently say about funeral practices in central-western France in the Middle Bronze Age?
Que peut-on actuellement dire des pratiques funéraires du Centre-Ouest de la France au Bronze moyen ?
Résumé
Abstract: In the Centre-West of France, there is very little data available regarding the funerary domain for all phases of the Bronze Age. The state of the information is moreover very variable according to the areas considered and their geological nature. Despite this, we propose to give an overview of the documentation available for the Middle Bronze Age in this region. Particular attention is paid to the Ouches site in Auzay (Vendée), a small group of about a dozen burials that have yielded large number of metal ornaments. This site, dating from the fifteenth to fourteenth century BC is still unique in the region, and therefore offers the opportunity to make various observations about the funerary practices and grave goods from the Late Middle to Early Late Bronze Age. Excavated in the 1990s during the construction of the A83 motorway, this site is currently the subject of a documentary synthesis with a view to a monographic publication. An enlargement around a number of isolated urn cremations presumed to be contemporary according to the 14C dates and data from the sepulchral caves in the karstic zones has made it possible to start work on drawing up a synthesis. The question of cultural influences, between the Atlantic world and the continental world, is addressed, in particular through a totally renewed typology of Middle Bronze Age metal ornaments
