Epi-biomarkers of coral exposure to sunscreen Pollution

Coral reefs are biodiversity hotspots that provide numerous ecosystem services critical for ecological and socio-economic stability. However, under increasing global change pressures, coral reefs are experiencing significant degradation, leading to biodiversity loss and a decline in associated ecosystem goods and services. This ongoing "coral reef crisis" is primarily driven by climate change-induced ocean warming, which triggers coral bleaching. The severity of bleaching is further exacerbated by additive or synergistic effects of other stressors, which compromise coral resilience. Among these stressors, UV filters used in sunscreens have recently been identified as harmful to corals, with evidence suggesting toxic effects for certain compounds. In response, several countries have enacted legislation to restrict or ban the use of the most damaging UV filters. Understanding the physiological impacts of a broad range of UV filters and identifying biomarkers of exposure are therefore critical for advancing the management of this emerging environmental issue. To address this, we have developed an integrative multi-omic approach that combines metabolomics, transcriptomics, metabarcoding, and epigenomics to characterize toxicopathological responses and identify biomarkers of exposure for five chemical families of UV filters.
