Tracking the first sheep breed in Southwest Asia: a 3D morphometric investigation on astragalus

To go further, we compared modern wild and domestic shapes and archaeological shapes classed by major chronological periods, from Neolithic to present. In fig. 4, you can observe the distribution of 245 individuals in the first three principal components coloured according to their chronological assignment. MANOVA result indicates significant differences between periods (Df=7; F=3.8032; p=0.001). According to axis 3, the distribution of individuals is chronological, going from the Neolithic in grey dot to the present in black dot. The two eastern mouflons are near to the Neolithic morphotypes and didn't have significant differences with the latter (p=0.328).
For more precision, in fig. 5, we compared the mean shapes of each chronological period according to the country of origin. Axis 2 and 3 of the PCA show a chronological structuring of the data: Neolithic and wild morphotypes are grouped in the positive part while modern morphotypes are found in the negative part. Thus, it would appear shape astragalus could be a marker of sheep population history.
