Real-time spectrum analysis of multi-GHz RF signals with 100% probability of interception in a simple photonic platform

Résumé

Digital electronics are intrinsically limited when it comes to on-the-fly processing of radio signals, whose bandwidth exceeds a few hundred MHz. There are two reasons for this: the limitations of analog-to-digital converter clocks, and the need to process large quantities of information in real time. We have developed a simple and original photonic architecture, based on a bi-directional frequency-shifting loops, for analog signal processing. In particular, our system enables real-time spectral analysis of signals up to 16 GHz, with an interception probability of 100%, a frequency resolution of 150 MHz, and a time resolution of 50 mu s. The bandwidth of the detection chain does not exceed 10 MSa/s.
