monitoring and modelling of stormwater trees
Instrumentation et modélisation d'arbres de pluie
Résumé
Stormwater trees are nature-based solutions for stormwater management. These are often retrofitted roadside trees with an improved infiltration capacity, to increase collection of runoff from neighbouring streets and sidewalks. Stormwater trees are considered as a pertinent stormwater control measure in highly urbanized areas, but the contribution of the tree (evapotranspiration) to the water balance is not well known, since it is difficult to measure. This PhD project aims to continuously monitor five stormwater trees and two control trees for water level in the infiltration trench, soil moisture in the tree pit, and sap flow to characterize the water balance. So far, two trees have been equipped with soil moisture sensors and a piezometer, and data has been collected for up to three months. One objective of the PhD project is to determine the hydrological performance of stormwater trees in a future climate through mechanistic numerical modelling on HYDRUS 2D and downscaled climatic projections.
