In this paper, we will examine the two known witnesses of a manuscript written by Charles Fontaine containing religious poems. We aim to find out which interpretation they provide, depending on the reader. Whereas the ms. Auxerre BM 89, which wasn’t prepared for any specific recipient, calls for the goodwill and rhetorical skills of an anonymous reader, the ms. Vatican Reg.lat.1630 relies on cardinal Odet de Châtillon’s erudition. In both manuscripts, epistles are combined with other close poetical forms such as meditations, orations and exhortations. In addition to providing the poet with a flexible frame, the epistolary genre serves as a welcoming interface for the reader to build their own spiritual path.
