Robots, AIs and the domains of likeness
Résumé
This presentation explores the notion of likeness in robotics and computer science, based on a distinction between biological life forms and social and cultural forms of life. It examines three types of likeness: life-likeness (through bio-inspired practices), human-likeness (through social signals and anthropomorphism), and social-likeness (through the role of behaviour during interaction). This presentation stresses that the social and cultural dimension is crucial to understand how we perceive and interact with robots, going beyond a simple interest in biological or physical imitation.
