Prolégomènes à l’édition de la "Légende dorée" traduite en français d’oïl par Jean de Vignay (ca 1340-1348)
Résumé
This study emphasizes the importance of producing scholarly editions for the dozen surviving French translations of the Legenda aurea by laying the foundation for a critical edition of Jean de Vignay’s Légende dorée (1340s), which serves as the focal point of the French corpus. Through an analysis of the errors and variants encountered in the manuscript tradition of this translation, we highlight the challenges posed by the conditions under which the deluxe Légende dorée manuscripts were produced, which allowed for cross-contamination at multiple levels. Drawing on recent advancements in the field of textual criticism, this essay argues for a critical edition that follows a Bedierist methodology while also focusing on the linguistic significance of de Vignay’s Légende dorée. We identify a base manuscript (Paris, BnF, fr. 241) that stands out due to its early production date (1348) and minimal errors; a group of four manuscripts that share fr. 241’s distinguishing features allows us to both make corrections and illustrate the fourteenth-century reception of the translator’s Middle French.
