Video-Based Analysis of the Mechanical Design Process in a Student Dyadic Activity

Résumé

The aim of this study is to rationalize the dyadic collaborative design activity of students. It explores the characteristics of the process underway in a mechanical design activity, from the point of view of the nature of actions initiated and external representations mobilized. This work is based on video recordings of the collaborative activity of six dyads of students engaged in designing solutions to improve an existing mechanical system. The workspace of each dyad is filmed by a camera and synchronized with the capture of the modelling actions on the dyads’ computer screens. The coding of the video recordings is, on the one hand, based on the characteristics of the external representations used. On the other hand, it is inspired a priori by the micro-strategies defined by Purcell et al. [1] and adopted by Gero and McNeil [2]. The identified categories of actions are enriched a posteriori by anchoring them to the data. By implementing the cSPADE algorithm to search for patterns, our study was able to identify the most frequent sequences of action categories and the most frequent sequences of mobilized external representations. In addition, a CBA classification algorithm makes it possible to detect which external representations are most frequently mobilized to support which categories of actions. These results therefore help to initiate a characterization of the design activity under study.
